Yorkshire are made to pay for lethargy by Harrison

David Harrison was the toast of Glamorgan yesterday as Yorkshire suffered a Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy hangover in their Norwich Union League First Division encounter at Headingley.

The 21-year-old seam bowler, without a wicket in four previous appearances in this competition, returned figures of 5 for 27 to pave the way for a convincing nine-wicket win.

Fresh from Saturday's six-wicket triumph over Somerset at Lord's, Yorkshire Phoenix played as if still under the influence of the victory champagne. Harrison's performance, which included a spell of five wickets for 10 runs in 26 balls, saw them hustled out for 167, while Robert Croft and Ian Thomas helped themselves to half-centuries as the Dragons strolled home with more than 20 overs to spare.

Harrison then made an impression with the bat, making 37 not out from 35 balls to put the seal on a victory that lifts Glamorgan to the top of the First Division at the expense of Worcestershire Royals who they play in a day-night game at Cardiff today.

Any hopes Yorkshire had winning were dashed by an opening stand of 102 in less than 14 overs between Croft and Thomas. The only wicket to fall was Croft, bowled between bat and pad by Ryan Sidebottom.

At Chester-le-Street Durham Dynamos, who had won only seven games in all forms of the game this season before yesterday, triumphed by six wickets over Somerset Sabres in the battle between the two bottom sides in the First Division. Marcus Trescothick warmed up for Thursday's final Test with a rapid 41 as Somerset made 204 for 9 in their 45 overs. But a third-wicket stand of 128 between Brad Hodge and Gordon Muchall helped Durham to reach their target with six balls to spare.
