Somerset's Mike Gregory, recent winner of the Norwegian and Belgian Opens, carried off the Embassy Gold Cup for the first time by beating Lancashire's Fran Lynch by three sets to two in the final at Stoke-on-Trent yesterday.
But the real hero of the day was Alan Chaffey, the 37-year-old Bedfordshire player, who lost a leg in a chalk quarry accident 13 years ago. Playing on crutches, he beat world No 1 Steve Beaton of Wiltshire 2-1 in the quarter-finals before losing 3-2 to Lynch in the last four.
