Durham have signed Sherwin Campbell, the West Indies opening batsman, as their overseas player for next season. Campbell, 24, has played in nine Tests for the West Indies. He had an outstanding tour of England this summer, scoring 450 Test runs at an average of 45.

Dermot Reeve, captain of the England team that will defend their Hong Kong Sixes title this weekend, was served with the High Court writ for negligence yesterday by a fan who was injured when struck by a ball during a practice session in Hong Kong last year. Marianne Hasell, 32, said she suffered a fractured skull, a grazed cornea and a detached retina when she was struck by the ball after Reeve, who also captains Warwickshire, allegedly failed to collect a practice throw.
