KAY MAXTED was on the reserve list for the International Dressage 'Friendly' Meeting, which finished yesterday in the grounds of Addington Manor, Buckinghamshire, writes Genevieve Murphy. Having gained her place when another rider dropped out, she made the most of it by winning the Prix St Georges and Intermediaire I before finishing runner-up in yesterday's freestyle to music.

Maxted was riding her 12- year-old, Jo Jo, by far the most successful of the British horses. This first international at Addington was being used to give experience to up-and-coming, rather than established, partnerships, and Maxted's late inclusion prevented the overseas riders from making a clean sweep of the top prizes.

Maxted's test to music had been put together in a hurry. She did not expect another victory yesterday but she came close, finishing second to Germany's Marion Henkel on Merlin.

German riders took the top three places in the Grand Prix which was also won by Henkel, this time on Contrast.

Jennie Loriston-Clarke, riding her home-bred stallion Catherston Dazzler, had the best British placing when finishing fourth. This was the first Grand Prix for the nine-year-old and Loriston-Clarke had good reason to be delighted with the horse's debut at this level.

British selectors could also take heart from the standard shown in the Junior Final Selection Trials, won by Fiona Bigwood on her mother's 12- year-old Pablo Picasso.
