The defending champion, Nick Faldo, put himself in contention to retain his Doral-Ryder Open title in Miami by shooting a fine four-under-par 68 in the second round. The Englishman bettered his first-round score by four strokes to give him a total of 140, six shots off the lead, held by Japan's Joe Ozaki. But Faldo's fellow former Open and US Masters champion Sandy Lyle missed the halfway cut. Sweden's Jesper Parnevik, Open runner- up in 1994, continued to the European challenge after adding a 71 to his opening 68 and is five shots behind Ozaki. This is the first time Ozaki - brother of the world No 8, Jumbo - has held the outright lead in an American tournament. He shot the best round of the day, a seven-under-par 65, to head the field by one stroke at 10 under par.
