Nick Faldo returned from a three-week break with a four-under 66 and trailed the leader, Glen Day, by three on the opening round of the Byron Nelson Classic in Irving, Texas.
However, Faldo's round was overshadowed by Day's nearly flawless 63. He compiled seven birdies to take a one-shot lead over Mark Calcavecchia and Jay Don Blake, while Japan's Joe Ozaki was among a group two shots off the pace.
"Today I kept it free and easy and light," Day, a European tour member from 1991 to 1993, said. "I could have very easily shot 60. I hit the hole enough to shoot 59."
Calcavecchia raised his game to an even higher level than he displayed in winning the Atlanta Classic last week. "I played twice as good today as any round last week," he said.
