Peter Reid, the Sunderland manager, has dispensed with the services of his chief coach Trevor Hartley and the reserve team coach Ian Ross. He has already appointed his former Everton colleague Paul Bracewell as his assistant.

Ronny Rosenthal, the Tottenham striker, has withdrawn from the Israel squad for their European Championship Group One qualifier against Romania in Bucharest on 7 June with a leg injury.

Barnet and Hartlepool were yesterday given a three-year deadline to upgrade their grounds or face expulsion from the Football League. By 1998, all Football League grounds must accommodate a minimum 6,000 spectators with 2,000 seats. Barnet fail on both criteria while Hartlepool's capacity at their Victoria Ground has dipped below 6,000. Other clubs who must install extra seats include Colchester, Darlington, Bristol Rovers, Wigan, Wycombe, Rochdale, Gillingham and Doncaster.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP SIX (Viseu, Portugal): Portugal 4 (Litos 27, Lisyakov 60og, Afonso Martins 63, Poejo 66) Latvia 0.
