Stan Pearson, who scored Manchester United's FA Cup winning goal in 1948, has died at the age of 78 in an Alderley Edge nursing home. The United and England striker made 345 appearances and scored 149 goals during a career which spanned World War II. He made eight appearances for England and scored five times for his country.

Tommy Burns, the Celtic manager, has been fined pounds 100 by the Scottish Football Association after appearing before its general purposes committee in Glasgow yesterday. Burns had been summoned to explain comments made in September and December which were critical of match referees.

Robert Prytz, the veteran former Rangers midfielder, has joined Kilmarnock on trial from the Swedish club, Malmo.

Ivan Golac, the former Southampton full-back and Dundee United manager, is the new coach of the Icelandic champions, IA Akranes.
