Martin Dobson, the former Everton and Burnley midfielder, who won five England caps, has been appointed youth development officer at Bolton. Dobson, 48, was player-manager at Bury from 1984-89 and had a spell in charge of Bristol Rovers in 1991.

Sheffield United are releasing Gordon Cowans, their 37-year-old former Wolves and Aston Villa midfielder, on a free transfer.
