A fifth-minute goal from Brett Angell ensured Stockport won promotion from the Second Division with a battling 1-0 victory at Chesterfield last night.

Dave Jones' side capped a memorable season, in which they lost in the Coca-Cola Cup semi-finals to Middlesbrough, by ensuring that they join the league leaders, Bury, in the First Division next season.

Stockport, who last reached the First Division (then the Second Division) in 1937, were made to work hard by a Chesterfield side who, after half- time at least, showed the spirit that had taken them to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Stockport endured nearly six minutes of injury time before more than 2,000 visiting fans could begin the celebrations.
