Football: Baggio completes Inter stroll
BAYERN MUNICH and Internazionale virtually guaranteed their places in the Champions' League with 4-0 victories in the first legs of their European Cup second qualifying round ties last night.
Inter, the Uefa Cup holders, stormed into a 3-0 lead against Latvia's Skonto Riga after just 21 minutes with goals from Ivan Zamorano, Diego Simeone and Nicola Ventola. Roberto Baggio, on his competitive debut for Inter, added the fourth in the second half.
Inspired by Stefan Effenberg, Bayern took a different route against Obilic Belgrade, scoring all their goals in the second half, with three coming within six minutes.
Bobby Robson's PSV Eindhoven side did not fare so well - they went down 2-1 in Slovenia to Maribor Teatanic.
The night's top scorers were Benfica, who hit six without reply against Beitar Jerusalem in Lisbon. Mark Pembridge, with two, and Brian Deane were among the marksmen.
Dynamo Kiev, who lost in the quarter-finals to Juventus last season, may not even reach the group stages this time after they lost 1-0 at home to Sparta Prague. Miroslav Beranec scored for the Czechs.
