BARCELONA stay in pole position in Spain after a 1-0 home win over Zaragoza yesterday, with Real Madrid second on goal difference after beating Cadiz 3-1. Michael Laudrup hit a fourth-minute winner for Barcelona, who had Jose Guardiola sent off. Madrid had to come from behind: Emilio Butragueno, with two, and Ivan Zamorano scored their goals.

Bayern Munich clung on to their one-point lead over Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga after discarding a two-goal lead at Borussia Monchengladbach. Christian Ziege and Mehmet Scholl were on target for the Bavarians before the break, but the Swede, Martin Dahlin, struck twice in the second half.

PSV Eindhoven regained the lead from Feyenoord in the Netherlands with a 3-1 home win over Utrecht. Romario scored twice to take his tally to 20 this season, either side of a free- kick goal from Erwin Koeman. PSV are one point ahead of the Rotterdam club, Ajax are a further four points adrift with a game in hand.
