Football: Cameron's high note

HEARTS SHOWED their fighting spirit to force a draw against a Tottenham side who controlled long periods of this friendly match at Tynecastle.

Steffen Iversen, who has been in good form in Spurs' pre-season outings, made one goal and scored another as Tottenham outplayed Hearts in the first half. The Norwegian striker created the opening goal, which was helped into his own net by Grant Murray, before heading the second himself shortly before the interval. However, after the break Lee Makel inspired a fightback with a goal straight from a free-kick and 20 minutes from time Colin Cameron headed the equaliser

Allan Nielsen was named on the official team-sheet and took part in Tottenham's warm-up, but he did not appear for the start of the game. He was replaced by Mark Gower, who had a spell on loan in Scotland last season with Motherwell. Gary Wales was on the bench for Hearts after the striker's pounds 50,000 move from Hamilton.

Hearts, who defeated Fulham in a friendly on Wednesday, almost scored after three minutes when Thomas Flogel sent a shot into the Tottenham goalkeeper Ian Walker's body following a cross from Makel.

However, Tottenham went on to dominate the first 45 minutes, even though they looked to be in third gear. The Hearts keeper, Gilles Rousset, did well to turn away a fierce volley by Darren Anderton and then reacted quickly to smother a shot from David Ginola. Jose Dominguez raced but shot over and Gower wasted a great chance before Tottenham took the lead in the 36th minute.

Hearts fans were furious as Spurs broke away to score with Leigh Jenkinson lying on the pitch following a heavy challenge by Sol Campbell. Iversen squared the ball to Anderton and Murray helped the ball into the net after Rousset had got a hand to it.

Tottenham added a second two minutes before the break when Iversen headed home after a lovely chip from Dominguez came back off the bar.

Hearts' best chance of the half fell to Scott Severin but he headed Makel's free-kick wide from close range. Makel decided to do the job himself four minutes after the break. The referee Kevin Stott, on an exchange visit to Scotland from the United States, gave a free-kick when Chris Perry's foul on Colin Cameron appeared to be inside the area. Hearts complained but no matter, Makel drove the free-kick into the corner to reduce their arrears.

Wales came on for Leigh Jenkinson in the 58th minute and 12 minutes later Hearts were level with a delightful goal from Cameron, who beat Walker to Stevie Fulton's pass and headed into the net off the underside of the bar.
