CELTIC face a tough task against Cologne at Parkhead in two weeks' time after losing 2-0 in the Uefa Cup first round, first leg at the German club's Mungersdorfer home last night. Liam Brady's side fell behind after 24 minutes when Jan Jensen, the Danish libero, headed Cologne's first goal.

Eight minutes from time Celtic conceded an unlucky second. Frank Ordenewitz just managed to get his head to a cross from Rico Steinmann which had deflected into his path off Celtic's Tom Boyd and John Collins as it flew across the penalty area.

Brady said: 'I thought 2-0 was one goal too many. It just goes to show that you can be bottom of the Bundesliga and still be not that bad.'

At Easter Road, in another Uefa Cup first round first leg tie, Hibernian could only draw 2-2 with Anderlecht. Dave Beaumont put Hibs ahead with his first goal for the club after just four minutes, but Anderlecht recovered through a Marc De Gryse's penalty (39 minutes) and Peter van Vossen (67). A late goal from Pat McGinlay saved Hibs, who had Mickey Weir sent off in the 73rd minute for a second bookable offence.
