Football: Coca-Cola Cup - Reading step up pressure on McGhee

Reading increased the pressure on their former manager, Mark McGhee, as they beat Wolves 4-2 in the Coca-Cola Cup third round at Elm Park last night. Two goals in each half overshadowed Steve Bull's 300th strike for the Midlanders.

It all left McGhee's future at Molineux in jeopardy. Now out of the Coca- Cola Cup, Wolves are also in a lowly position in the First Division despite having spent pounds 14m on their team.

McGhee received the now customary hostile reaction at his former home ground as the Reading fans vented their anger at the manner of the Wolves manager's departure to Leicester nearly three years ago.

Reading took the lead through an own goal by Adrian Williams after 32 minutes. Two minutes later Phil Parkinson's 25-yard shot with the outside of his right foot made it 2-0.

Bull pulled one back, but within 76 seconds of the restart Michael Meaker made it three. Keith McPherson's header after 54 minutes secured victory before Bull hit his landmark goal.

Matthew Le Tissier marked his 29th birthday with a stunning opening goal as Southampton beat Barnsley 2-1. Kevin Davies's winner with 90 seconds left secured the Saints' place in the last 16.
