Football: Enfield's dreams are crushed by Cresswell

AN IMPROVISED finish from the York City striker Richard Cresswell ended brave Enfield's interest in the FA Cup as they went down 2-1 at Bootham Crescent in a first round replay last night.

Cresswell, who scored both goals in the 2-2 draw at Enfield, made his telling contribution on the stroke of half-time. The York leading scorer had tumbled to the ground under a challenge from Steve Terry. But still on the floor with his back to goal he snaked a leg out to back-heel the ball past Enfield goalkeeper Andy Pape from close range to earn his side a trip to Wrexham in the next round.

The Minstermen had taken an 18th-minute lead through Scott Jordan,but the E's hit back nine minutes later with a goal that had a hint of controversy. The referee Peter Walton waved play on after York's Steve Agnew had seemingly been wrestled to the ground. Richard Dunwell, the Enfield striker, curled a dipping shot past York goalkeeper Andy Warrington which went in off the crossbar.

But the game drifted away from the Londoners after 52 minutes when John Richardson, earlier booked for a foul on Mark Tinkler, was given his marching orders for a mistimed tackle on Prendergast.

Tamworth, from the Dr Martens League, were beaten 4-1 by Third Division Exeter. The home side were four ahead through a Tony Rowe own-goal after 15 minutes, two from Darran Rowbotham on 31 and 45 and Steve Flack on 51 before Gary Smith's consolation strike 15 minutes from time.

In the all-Third Division replay at Rochdale, the home side played the entire second half with 10 men after Paul Sparrow's dismissal for foul play, but still beat Scarborough 2-0 with goals from Mark Monington and Ian Bryson.

The replay between Conference side Kidderminster and Third Division Plymouth was abandoned at half-time because of fog, while Second Division Notts County's game with Hendon, from the Ryman League, was postponed.
