Football / European Round-Up: Real take over at top
DEPORTIVO LA CORUNA had a player sent off and missed a penalty as they surrendered the Spanish league leadership to Real Madrid with a 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu. Real fell behind in the 33rd minute when Claudio Barragan touched home a cross from Jose Bebeto, but a few minutes after the interval Claudio was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Ivan Zamorano headed Real level in the 67th minute, but Deportivo then missed a penalty. Real's winner in the 84th minute came from Michel's superb drive from outside the penalty area.
Barcelona stepped up their pursuit of the title in third place with a 7-2 thrashing of Sporting Gijon.
