CHESTER CITY V MANCHESTER CITY
CHESTER'S TINY Deva Stadium is a 6,000-plus sell-out, though the visitors' vast travelling support would have filled the ground themselves. Joe Royle's First Division side have lost three games in a row and are without their new signing Robert Taylor (cup-tied) so may rely on Shaun Goater and Gareth Taylor in attack.
HUDDERSFIELD V LIVERPOOL
GRARD HOULLIER will remind his Liverpool players of last season's disappointing exit when they were beaten by Manchester United in the dying minutes after leading 1-0 for most of the game. "It's a defeat I still haven't been able to swallow," he said. Liverpool will be without Jamie Redknapp and Patrik Berger, but should have Vladimir Smicer back, while David Thompson is suspended. Huddersfield, conquerors of Chelsea in the Worthington Cup and flying high in the First Division after going 11 games unbeaten, are expected to retain Scott Sellars because Chris Beech and George Donis are injured.
LEEDS UNITED V PORT VALE
DAVID O'LEARY could utilise his Leeds squad by resting one or two of his younger players for the tie with Vale and bringing in Darren Huckerby, Michael Duberry and Alfie Haaland. Vale, struggling in the First Division, will be without the suspended Dave Brammer and Matthew Carragher.
SHEFFIELD UTD V RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS
NEIL WARNOCK, the new Sheffield United manager, must overcome a defensive dilemma with Lee Sandford and Davy Gysbrechts suspended, while Shaun Murphy is a doubt with flu. Diamonds, going well in the Conference, expect their travelling support to number more than 3,000.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR V NEWCASTLE UTD
SPURS ARE anxious to claim revenge against the team that knocked them out in the semi-finals last season. They will be without the suspended pair Tim Sherwood and Mauricio Taricco, while Luke Young is set to keep his place at right back with Justin Edinburgh returning on the left. Allan Nielsen and Stephen Clemence will be competing for the midfield slot vacated by Sherwood. Kevin Gallacher returns to the Newcastle squad after shaking off a hamstring injury, and Kieron Dyer and Duncan Ferguson are both in contention. Nolberto Solano is suspended while Franck Dumas could be out for eight weeks after fracturing and dislocating his elbow in the Uefa Cup exit against Roma.
ARSENAL V BLACKPOOL
WITH TONY Adams suffering familiar back problems, Matthew Upson out for the season with damaged cruciate ligaments and Martin Keown carrying a calf injury, Arsenal might have to pair Nelson Vivas and Oleg Luzhny in the centre of defence.
IPSWICH TOWN V SOUTHAMPTON
THE NORWEGIAN midfielder Trond Soltvedt is hoping to be fit for Southampton. Soltvedt, a pounds 300,000 signing from Coventry at the start of the season, has not played since damaging his knee in the 4-0 Worthington Cup defeat against Aston Villa last week. Mark Hughes and Claus Lundekvam return after one-match bans.
