DAVID KELLY scored a second-half hat-trick to earn Tranmere Rovers a spectacular 5-1 home victory over Coventry City in the first leg of their Worthington Cup second-round tie last night.
Gary McAllister gave the below-strength Premiership side a seventh-minute lead but Scott Taylor equalised for the First Division strugglers five minutes into the second half.
Kelly struck in the 58th and 63rd minutes before Coventry had David Burrows sent off 20 minutes from time. Kelly completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later and Taylor added his second in stoppage time.
Wimbledon needed a 73rd-minute Michael Hughes equaliser to draw 1-1 at Second Division Cardiff, while Bradford were held at home by Reading.
