PAUL GASCOIGNE, who has just recovered from tendinitis, limped out of a training session with his Italian club, Lazio, in Rome on Tuesday with a twisted ankle.
Gascoigne, who is suspended from England's World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands in Rotterdam next week, had been hoping to play in Lazio's Italian Cup tie against the Third Division side Avellino last night.
But Claudio Bartolini, the Lazio club doctor, said: 'The consequences of the injury are not yet known, but I can say right now that Gascoigne won't be able to play again for a while.'
Nery Pumpido, Argentina's goalkeeper in the side that won the 1986 World Cup, is retiring from professional football at the age of 36, after 16 years.
