Paul Futcher, the former Derby and Barnsley defender, has been appointed manager of the Vauxhall Conference side Southport. The 40-year- old succeeds Ronnie Moore, who left to become manager at Rotherham.

Cardiff yesterday signed the 31-year-old goalkeeper Jon Hallworth, from Oldham, on a three-year contract for a fee believed to be worth pounds 250,000.

Rangers have scrapped their pre-season tour of Norway after serious travel problems with one of the three games on their itinerary.

Gerry Sweeney has resigned as assistant manager of Second Division Bristol City. The club's manager, John Ward, has refused to comment on his departure.
