Laurie Calloway, the former Rochdale, Blackburn, Southport, York and Shrewsbury midfielder, has been dismissed as head coach of the Major League Soccer club San Jose Clash. His replacement is the Belfast-born Brian Quinn, a former US international midfielder who was once on Everton's books.

Egypt's football federation has banned the defender Ibrahim Hassan from the international squad for life for making an obscene gesture to Moroccan fans during an African Nations' Cup qualifier in Rabat last Saturday. "The fans insulted Egypt," Hassan said.
