The Blackburn midfielder Billy McKinlay has escaped with a pounds 750 fine after becoming the first Premiership player to amass 45 penalty points in a season. The Scottish international was up before a Football Association disciplinary committee yesterday and feared he may get a long-term suspension, but the FA decided on the fine and a warning to McKinlay over his future conduct.

Des Walker will be staying at Sheffield Wednesday, after he signed a new four-year contract yesterday. The former England centre-half had been the subject of speculation about moves to Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

The Nottingham Forest striker Jason Lee has agreed personal terms with Watford and will join the Second Division side when the clubs agree a fee.

Brighton have been told by Crawley Council that they cannot share the new Broadfield Stadium with Crawley Town next season. The council-owned ground is due to be completed at the end of July, and was considered an option by the Seagulls should their plans to use Hove greyhound stadium fall through.
