Manchester City have signed the 6ft 4in Mansfield goalkeeper Nick Weaver for pounds 200,000 as an understudy to the Northern Ireland international, Tommy Wright.

The Newcastle striker Faustino Asprilla was yesterday suspended for two international matches by Fifa, world football's governing body, after being sent off during a World Cup qualifier against Paraguay last month. The Paraguayan goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert, who was sent off along with Asprilla for fighting, was banned for four matches. Colombia's Victor Aristizabal was also suspended for three matches.

Germany have an injury crisis for tonight's World Cup qualifier against the Group Nine leaders, Ukraine, in Bremen. Andy Moller, Matthias Sammer, Stefan Reuter and Lars Ricken are all out. Jens Jeremies from 1860 Munich, Sven Kmetsch from Hamburg and Jens Nowotny from Bayer Leverkusen are uncapped players in the squad.

The Real Madrid coach, Fabio Capello, who moved to Spain from Milan last summer, announced yesterday that he is to leave the Spanish league leaders at the end of the season. He has been linked with a return to Milan.

Sandor Puhl, of Hungary, will referee the European Cup final between Juventus and Borussia Dortmund in Munich on 28 May. Puhl took charge of the 1994 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy.

Markus Merk, of Germany, will referee the European Cup-Winners' Cup final between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in Rotterdam on 14 May.

The first leg of the Uefa Cup final between Schalke, of Germany, and Internazionale, of Italy, in Gelsenkirchen on 7 May will be refereed by the Frenchman Marc Batta. Jose Garcia-Aranda, of Spain, will officiate in the second leg in Milan two weeks later.
