Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley are all being lined up to play a testimonial fixture for Wes Saunders, formerly of Newcastle, at Torquay's Plainmoor ground on Sunday 18 May.

Germany have an injury crisis for tonight's World Cup qualifier against the Group Nine leaders, Ukraine, in Bremen. Andy Moller, Matthias Sammer, Stefan Reuter and Lars Ricken are all out. Jens Jeremies from 1860 Munich, Sven Kmetsch from Hamburg and Jens Nowotny from Bayer Leverkusen are uncapped players in the squad.

The Real Madrid coach, Fabio Capello, who moved to Spain from Milan last summer, announced yesterday that he is to leave the Spanish League leaders at the end of the season. He has been linked with a return to Milan.

The Milan forward Roberto Baggio, recalled to the international squad for the first time in two years, is expected to start on the bench for Italy against Poland in tonight's World Cup qualifier in Naples - even though the Juventus striker Christian Vieri has been ruled out with tonsillitis.

Sandor Puhl, of Hungary, will referee the European Cup final between Juventus and Borussia Dortmund in Munich on 28 May. Puhl also refereed the first leg of the 1993 Uefa Cup final between Juventus and Borussia and was the referee for the 1994 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy, in the United States.

Markus Merk, of Germany, will referee the European Cup-Winners' Cup final between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in Rotterdam on 14 May.

The first leg of the Uefa Cup final between Schalke, of Germany, and Internazionale, of Italy, in Gelsenkirchen on 7 May will be refereed by France's Marc Batta. Jose Garcia-Aranda, of Spain, will officiate in the second leg in Milan two weeks later.
