SCOTTISH pride suffered a damaging blow yesterday when their under-21 side began their European Championship campaign with a depressing defeat by Finland in Salo.
A seventh-minute penalty by Sami Ristila, conceded by Aberdeen's Hugh Robertson, clinched victory for the Finns and earned them a psychological lift before today's senior game in Helsinki.
In the same competition, Middlesbrough's Alan Moore rescued the Republic of Ireland with a 69th- minute debut equaliser against Latvia in Riga. Imants Bleidelis had opened the scoring after 22 minutes.
