VALENCIA, who took over at the top of the Spanish league at the weekend, were swept out of the Uefa Cup by a deluge of goals as Karlsruhe beat them 7-0 to win last night's second-round tie 8-3 on aggregate. They protected their 3-1 advantage from the first leg for half an hour before Edgar Schmitt scored the first of his four goals.
In the same competition, Atletico Madrid took a 1-0 lead to Crete where they were bounced out by OFI. Nikos Mahlas was involved in both second-half goals in the Cretans' 2-0 win, scoring the first and earning the penalty with which George Tsifoutis struck the decisive blow.
