Football: Sutton's face-saver

BLACKBURN'S blues refuse to blow away completely, and last night Kenny Dalglish's expensively assembled ensemble could produce no more than a 1-1 draw at Second Division Birmingham City.

Even that was no formality, Chris Sutton's 71st-minute equaliser cancelling out Steve McGavin's early goal for the hosts and securing a 2-1 aggregate win.

Stan Collymore spurned a host of chances as Nottingham Forest, 2-1 up from the first leg, moved into the third round after a goalless draw at Third Division Hereford.

Swansea, of the Second Division, were 1-0 winners over Norwich at the Vetch Field, but the Premiership side went through thanks to their 3-0 first-leg victory. Colin Pascoe scored for the Welsh side, who had Kwame Ampadu sent off in the second half.

John Goodman's 64th- minute goal earned Millwall a 3-2 aggregate victory over Sunderland at Roker Park. Millwall led 2-1 from the first leg, but Phil Gray equalised in the 58th minute before Goodman's decisive intervention.

Lee Richardson was Oldham's match-winner as they made hard work of beating Oxford United at Boundary Park. The Second Division high-flyers frustrated Oldham for 75 minutes before Richardson made the breakthrough for a 1-0 win which sealed a 2-1 aggregate victory for the First Division side.

Rangers, the Scottish champions, yesterday agreed a price of pounds 350,000 with Tranmere Rovers for the sale of the former England full- back Gary Stevens, who has yet to agree personal terms.
