Tony Barton, the manager of Aston Villa when they won the European Cup in 1982, has died at his home in Hampshire, aged 57. Barton, who underwent heart by-pass surgery last year, was promoted by Villa when Ron Saunders resigned four months before the triumph over Bayern Munich. He was sacked within two years, and later suffered a heart attack while in charge of Northampton. Dennis Mortimer, Villa's captain on that historic night in Rotterdam, last night paid tribute to Barton. 'He was a nice guy who never shot his mouth off but just got on with the job'.
