CHRIS WADDLE will learn today if his recent run of prodigious form has won him recognition in Graham Taylor's England squad for the important World Cup qualifying tie against the Netherlands on 28 April.

One experienced match-winner who will not be playing in the international is the Dutchman, Marco van Basten. His club, Milan, confirmed yesterday that Van Basten will not have regained full fitness after ankle surgery. 'England-Netherlands is not the right match for a comeback after a long injury,' a Milan spokesman said.

Peter Schmeichel, the Manchester United keeper, must wait to see whether he faces a Football Association charge for allegedly feigning injury. The Dane was accused of over-reacting after an incident with Coventry's Mick Quinn at Highfield Road on Monday. The referee at the game, Roger Gifford, may study a videotape before submitting his report to the FA.

John McClelland, the former Northern Ireland captain, has taken over as manager of the Scottish Premier League club, St Johnstone.
