Football: Wales go for part-time Toshack

JOHN TOSHACK, the Real Sociedad manager, was yesterday appointed Wales manager on a part- time basis, so ending Terry Yorath's hopes of re-acquiring his old position.

Toshack confirmed his continuing allegiance to Real Sociedad yesterday when he signed a two-year extension on his contract taking him up to 1998. Talking about his arrangement with Wales, Toshack said: 'The club put no obstacles in my way and that made the agreement possible. The 10 qualifying games in the European Championship will coincide with matches that Spain will have to play, so there will be no league fixtures to worry about the previous weekend.

'However, if there's a Spanish Cup game that clashes with the Welsh international there will be no argument because Real Sociedad have first call. The Welsh people also know that my only concern will be in getting them to the finals in 1996. As regards the Under-21 side and grass- roots football, my work in Spain would not allow me to become involved.'

Mike Smith, the Wales manager between 1974 and 1979, will assist with the senior and Under-21 teams.
