'THE DREAM that Greek soccer had awaited for 64 years turned into a nightmare,' the Communist daily newspaper Rizospastis said yesterday following the Greek team's World Cup debut which resulted in a 4-0 rout by Argentina at the Foxboro Stadium in Boston on Tuesday. It was the biggest defeat so far at the tournament.
'Greek tragedy in just 83 seconds,' the English-language Athens News fulminated on its front page. Gabriel Batistuta scored three goals, one from a penalty in the game's final minute, with Diego Maradona netting the fourth.
'Nerves brought on the four goals in our national team's debut,' the conservative Apogevmatini wrote.
