Football: Wright's England concern

IAN WRIGHT is in danger of missing his third consecutive England match as a result of an ankle injury sustained in the FA Cup final replay on Thursday. It comes on top of a broken toe and Gary Lewin, the Arsenal physiotherapist, said yesterday that his condition is cause for concern.

The striker will require an X-ray today before knowing whether he can join the rest of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers in Poland and Norway. Martin Keown, his clubmate, has already joined up with the squad despite being laid low with a virus for a couple of days, while Tony Adams's groin is sore and will probably need an operation some time during the summer.

Arsenal have received the support of Rick Parry, the Premier League's chief executive, in their plans to show instant action replays on giant screens at Highbury next season. Sanction, however, can only be granted by Uefa, which has opposed similar requests.

Mike Walker, the Norwich manager, has been promised money to strengthen his team's defences after Arsenal's FA Cup win - 'the most important match in Norwich's history,' the chairman Robert Chase said - assured the club of a Uefa Cup place next season.

Steve Coppell has declared a wish to stay in the game following his resignation as the manager of Crystal Palace on Thursday. 'I'm not put off football management at all,' he said yesterday. 'I just fell off the bike and I want to get back on.'

Cardiff have sacked a member of their senior squad for selling FA Cup final tickets to a tout. They said they will not name him until the players return from a break next Thursday.
