Manuel Neuer has put pen to paper on a contract extension with Bayern Munich, it has been confirmed.

The German international, who joined from Schalke way back in the summer of 2011, extends his stay with the reigning Bundesliga champions until 2023 at the earliest.

The pre-contract arrival of fellow German Alexander Nubel had prompted speculation the 34-year-old may be on the move this summer.

But following the resumption of the Bundesliga season last weekend Neuer is delighted to put any such talk to bed.

“During the weeks of the shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic, I didn’t want to make a decision because nobody knew if, when and how Bundesliga football would continue,” he said.

“It was important for me to continue working with our goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. Now this has been resolved, I look to the future with great optimism. I feel very comfortable and at home in Bavaria. Bayern are one of Europe’s top football clubs.”

Bayern are delighted to tie Neuer down with club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge describing him as “the best goalkeeper in the world”.

“FC Bayern are very happy Manuel has extended his contract until 30 June 2023,” he said. “Manuel is the best goalkeeper in the world and our captain.”
