UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw

With Real Madrid knocked out of the Champions League, there will be a new name on the famous trophy by the end of the 2018/19 season.

Real have won the last three editions of the Champions League, but after defeat against Ajax last night they won’t get the chance to defend their crown at the home of their city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Ajax join Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs in the quarter-final draw while the other six places are still to be confirmed. Here’s all you need to know about the draw:

When is it?

The draw for the Champions league quarter-finals will be held at around 11am (GMT) on Friday 15th March. It will take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The draw for the semi-finals and final will be held immediately afterwards.

Where can I watch it?

The draw will be shown live on BT Sport and can be streamed live via the UEFA website uefa.com. Alternatively, you can follow the draw through the Independent’s live blog.

Who is in it?

The teams qualified are:

Tottenham Hotspur (England), Ajax Amsterdam (Netherlands)

To be confirmed

PSG (France) or Manchester United (England)

FC Porto (Portugal) or AS Roma (Italy)

Manchester City (England) or Schalke 04 (Germany)

Juventus (Italy) or Atletico Madrid (Spain)

Bayern Munich (Germany) or Liverpool (England)

Barcelona (Spain) or Olympique Lyonnais (France)

How does the draw work?

In the previous round, group winners were drawn against group runners-up and the group winners earned the right to play the away leg first.

This time around, anybody can be drawn against anybody and teams from the same country can meet each other for the first time in the competition- as Liverpool and Manchester City did last year. The team drawn out first will play the first leg at home.

Once the draw for the quarter-finals has been made, teams will find out who they will meet in the semi-finals and final should they progress from the last eight- mapping out their route to the final.

Who is in each Pot?

As oppose to the round of 16 draw which was divided into two pots of eight teams, all eight teams will be in the same pot for the quarter-final draw.

When is the Champions League final?

The Champions League final will take place on June 1 at Atletico’s Wanda Metroplitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain. The game kicks off at 8pm (GMT) and will be shown live on BT Sport.
