Tottenham vs Liverpool live stream: Free BT Sport YouTube video feed infuriates viewers after ‘really basic error’

Viewers were unable to watch the Champions League final between Spurs and Liverpool online as players were appearing blurred across screens around the UK

The live YouTube coverage of the Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool descended into farce from kick-off as the players were left blurred across the screen, making it near-impossible to make out what was actually happening.

Tottenham were infuriated inside 30 seconds as referee Damir Skomina awarded a penalty for a controversial handball by Moussa Sissoko, but their anger was nothing compared to those watching online at home.

The match was not just being shown live on BT Sport 2, but also on the broadcaster’s YouTube channel for free, meaning viewers who don’t have subscriptions to the sports provider were still able to watch from home.

Yet viewers quickly started to post their complaints on social media, with many confused as to why their screens were so blurry.

Once it became clear that they were not the only ones to be suffering the technical problems, the confusion turned to fury.

“This YouTube stream is dreadful,” said :Gordon1969Kevin, with “MadMelvin 367 adding: “This @btsport YouTube stream is absolutely shocking.”

The messages quickly mounted up, with hundreds of thousands of viewers watching in the UK unable to watch the game properly.

“Is anyone else having a slightly psychedelic experience watching the football on the official YouTube stream? Or is it just my TV? Or just me?” wrote @tobygmscott.

@rundaverun93 added: “Is it just my YouTube stream that looks like players are spilling coke and flares out their pockets?”

However, as YouTuber Tom Scott explained, the problem was “a really basic error”.

“If you're watching the Champions League final on YouTube and wondering why the video's all juddery: BT Sport are filming at 25fps but streaming at 30fps. Every fifth frame is being sent twice,” Scott wrote on Twitter.

“It's a really basic error that a novice streamer would spot, but somehow they haven't.”

Furthermore, BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker appeared to make light of the issues on the live broadcast of the match, noting at the start of the second half about the ability to watch it online for free.

"Remember, you can watch on the BT Sport App and on YouTube in better colours and better pictures than ever before," Lineker said.
