Bayern Munich thumped Werder Bremen 7-0 in a scintillating performance ahead of their meeting with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday as they equalled their record of 26 away games without defeat. Franck Ribery enhanced his Ballon d’Or credentials with two goals and a sublime display as Daniel van Buyten, Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and summer-signing Mario Gotze all found the back of the net to help the Bavarians extend their unbeaten Bundesliga run to an unprecedented 40 matches.

Goran Pandev’s double and a Blerim Dzemaili strike were not enough to secure a win for Napoli as they twice surrendered the lead and conceded a late equaliser to draw 3-3 with Udinese on Saturday. Rafael Benitez’s side, who are now eight points behind Serie A leaders Juventus in third place, host Arsenal on Wednesday in their final Group F match needing to better Borussia Dortmund’s result against Marseille in order to progress to the knockout stage.

Ukrainian champions Shakhter Donetsk warmed up for their concluding group stage fixture against Manchester United with a 1-0 victory away from home over fifth placed Chornomorets to move five points clear at the summit of the Ukrainian Premier League. Top scorer Adriano’s strike just before the interval was enough to hand three points to the league leaders who would guarantee qualification from the group stage with a win over Group A leaders United.

Romanian side Steaua Bucharest, who travel to Chelsea on Wednesday night, drew 1-1 with former Champions League competitors Otelul Galati. Amazingly it was their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw in the league. The club are currently third in the Liga I, three points behind leaders Astra Giurgiu, although they have played one game fewer.
