Eintracht Frankfurt fans celebrate German Cup final victory

If Eintracht Frankfurt’s shock DFB-Pokal Cup final victory over Bayern Munich wasn’t good enough for Niko Kovac’s side, the reception they received on the return to the city centre was one they will not forget any time soon.

Frankfurt stunned Bundesliga champions Bayern in Saturday’s Cup final to win the final domestic trophy of the German season, despite having just 22 per cent possession. Two goals from Ante Rebic cancelled out Robert Lewandowski’s second-half strike, and a third from Mijat Gacinovic six minutes into injury time put the icing on the cake to trigger the celebrations.

But those joyful scenes on the Olympiastadion pitch were nothing compared to the wild celebrations back in the Frankfurt, with midfielder Gelson Fernandes recording the view from the Römer balcony looking out across thousands of fans who gathered to revel in the unlikely triumph.

Having won four German Cup finals this decade and the last six Bundesliga titles, Bayern went into the final as heavy favourites even though Frankfurt reached the final last season – only to suffer defeat by Borussia Dortmund.

The victory saw Frankfurt lift the DFB-Pokal for the fifth time in their history, putting the club joint-third on the winners’ list alongside Schalke with only 18-time champions Bayern and Werder Bremer ahead, with the latter on six wins.
