Former Bayer Leverkusen defender Emir Spahic has been fined €75,000 (£53,750) for his attack brawl with staff when he was still at the club.

The centre-back, 35, got involved in a row with two stewards when two members of his entourage were stopped from entering the dressing room after a German Cup defeat to Bayern Munich on 8 April.

Spahic headbutted a steward and punched another during a brawl at the BayArena that involved around 20 people.

As well as being sacked by the club, the Bosnian was banned from football for three months and hit with a €20,000 by the German FA.

But following a seven month investigation by the Cologne public prosecutor Ulf Willuhn, who has now closed the case, Spahic was hit by the larger fine.

The money will be paid to three refugee organisations; Spahic will also have to pay an extra €3,500 (£2,500) in damages.

Speaking after the incident in April, Bayer CEO Michael Schade told the club website: "Recent findings after the incident last Wednesday left us with no choice.

"We could no longer wait for the outcome of the legal investigation or a possible criminal case."

Spahic signed for Bundesliga rivals Hamburg in July.

"It was important to me that during this hard time I had encouragement and people on my side," Spahic told German sports magazine Kicker.

"And it was important to me that I could continue my career in the Bundesliga... I have to be grateful to Hamburg."
