European Super League: The best memes mocking Arsenal, Spurs and the new competition

Social media platforms have been home to widespread criticism of the planned league, with memes inevitably being shared amid the backlash

The widespread critical response to plans for a European Super League has – perhaps unsurprisingly – seen fans take to social media to post memes mocking the new competition.

On Sunday, plans were revealed for a breakaway competition involving the Premier League’s ‘big six’ clubs, as well as three giants from Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A, with other teams expected to join.

Manchester United, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are the English clubs in question who are due to be a part of the Super League, while Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid join them, as do Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The news has been met with overwhelming criticism from fans, pundits and even governing bodies including Uefa, with the English, Italian and Spanish FAs, Premier League, La Liga and Serie A threatening to expel clubs from domestic competitions.

Amid supporters’ criticism of the planned competition, memes were posted on Twitter to mock the European Super League and some of its participants.

One user likened the tournament to a party with selective invites, with Tottenham edging out Leicester and West Ham – despite those two clubs’ superior league positions.

Another shared a video of Olympic athlete Jeffrey Julmis falling at the first hurdle – literally – at the 2016 Rio Games, suggesting Arsenal’s run in the European Super League would be equally unsuccessful.

“The European Super League logo is just a ‘no’ symbol but stylised plus gradient,” one user wrote.

Another shared a picture of the Disney character Scrooge McDuck, hinting at the “greed” that many observers have suggested lies behind the new competition.

One tweet saw a user quoting George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, hitting out at the suggested power imbalance that has enabled the richest clubs to form the European Super League despite mixed performances in Europe in recent years.

The news of the European Super League comes ahead of expected plans for a revamped Champions League starting in 2024.
