German football fans set the Rhine 'on fire' as Fortuna Dusseldorf celebrate their 120th anniversary with incredible video

How do you celebrate an anniversary? Some may choose to take their loved ones on a holiday, or something that evokes a fond memory of that special moment from the past. In Düsseldorf, they set a river on fire.

Supporters of German club Fortuna Düsseldorf lined the banks of the River Rhine, armed with a flare each, in order to celebrate the club’s 120th anniversary of its founding. With their defining moment coming in the form of the 1979 European Cup Winners’ Cup final appearance, Fortuna have had little to cheer about in recent years.

They are battling away in the second tier of the German league system, sitting in seventh having not won any of their last five matches.

However, the support shown for clubs in Germany is second to none, and the Fortuna fans have done their bit to add weight to that reputation.

Holding up a flare each, the Rhine suddenly gave the image that it was on fire, and the incredible scene looked like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster rather than a night-time stroll by the river.
