Jurgen Klopp warns Liverpool not to be overconfident going into second meeting with NK Maribor
He also admitted he was still not sure on whether Coutinho or Lovren would feature
Jürgen Klopp has called for focus from his Liverpool FC players ahead of their second meeting with NK Maribor, a fortnight on from beating the Slovenian champions 7-0 away from home.
Liverpool recorded their biggest-ever European away victory in Maribor earlier this month and picked up their first win of this season’s Champions League group stages in the process.
The result, combined with Spartak Moscow’s shock 5-1 win over Sevilla, put Klopp’s side top of Group E but having taken just five points from their opening three games, he insists now is not the time for his players to get complacent.
Who could line up for Liverpool against Maribor?
Show all 11“I can imagine what people think after results like this and after 7-0 a lot of people wouldn't respect Maribor,” the Liverpool manager said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
“The result was not one per cent of our analysis. Maybe it is a challenge for a lot of people to be 100 per cent spot on but it is my job to ensure we are 100 per cent spot on.
“I had too many football games in my life to feel relaxed before a game like this. It is the Champions League. We decide by our performance whether we stay in the Champions League.
“The last result between Moscow and Sevilla people thought 'Oops, what happened there?'
“This group is still open but I don't care about the group, I care about us.”
Liverpool returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 victory at Huddersfield Town going some way to nursing the wounds of the previous weekend’s 4-1 reverse at Tottenham Hotspur.
Klopp ensured he would play his “strongest team possible”, though whether his line-up will include Philippe Coutinho and Dejan Lovren remains to be seen.
The pair sat out of Saturday’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town with adductor and groin injuries respectively and are still doubtful for the visit of Maribor.
“Not 100 per cent sure,” Klopp said of the pair’s availability. “They are both much better but I don't know if they will be OK for tomorrow night."
