Real Madrid lift the Champions League trophy

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson refused to blame goalkeeper Loris Karius for the club’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

The German was to blame for two of Real’s goals in the 3-1 loss.

Early in the second-half, Karius rolled the ball out directly into the path of striker Karim Benzema, who then proceeded to poke the ball into the open net.

And after goals from Sadio Mane and a sensational Gareth Bale overhead kick, Karius fumbled a long-range strike from the Welshman to hand victory to the Spanish side.

But Henderson refused to blame defeat on the 24-year-old.

“The first goal I am not sure what happened, whether Karim Benzema stopped it with his hand, and then the overhead kick he could do nothing about,” Henderson said after the match.

“The third goal, the ball had loads of movement on it. It is not the mistakes Loris Karius made, we got to the final as a team and lose as a team. It is about everybody.

“We were not good enough on the night, and I am so proud of the players and the fans who came out for us on the night. I hope we can carry on and get into more finals and use it going forward.

“Football moves forward, we have a World Cup coming up so you have to move on and the season starts really quickly. We have to be proud of getting here. It will hurt for a while but we have to keep going.”

There was plenty of drama after the match, as both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale opened the door to summer transfers away from Real Madrid.
