Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed how hard it was to hear Luke Shaw cry down the phone to him.

The Argentinian boss, who coached Shaw during the pair's time at Southampton together, rang Shaw to wish him well on his road to recovery, after the Manchester United youngster suffered a double fracture of his right leg in his side's tie against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

The horrific injury looks likely to sideline Shaw for at least six months and has thrown his involvement in England's Euro 2016 campaign into severe doubt.

“I spoke with Luke this morning to wish him a speedy recovery, but it is always difficult with this type of injury because he was crying – not only from the pain, but because it is a long road for him,” Pochettino told a press conference ahead of his club's Europa League clash with FK Qarabag.

“I feel very sorry for him and very bad for him. I was watching on TV when it happened and you know straight away, from the reaction, that it was serious."

Pochettino stopped short of criticising Hector Moreno, the PSV defender whose hefty challenge felled Shaw and caused the injury, and instead stressed the misfortune of the situation.

“The intention of Moreno was not to make this situation," he said.

“But there is always a danger that it can happen in a split second, and it was just very, very unlucky for Luke."

Shaw has remained in an Eindhoven hospital after undergoing preliminary surgery on Tuesday night, mere hours after sustaining the injury.

The 20-year-old will undergo further surgery on his return to Manchester, before beginning a period of rehabilitation.
