David de Gea insists he did not pay heed to “stupid” criticism he faced for his performances during Spain’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
The Manchester United goalkeeper endured a difficult summer at international level, with a costly mistake in his national side’s opening 3-3 draw with Portugal.
Spain progressed through the groups but were eliminated by hosts Russia on penalties, with De Gea again criticised for his display in the shoot-out.

Luis Enrique, Spain’s new head coach, retained De Gea for the Nations League victories over England and Croatia this month, despite competition from Chelsea’s Kepa.
And De Gea, who established himself as Spain’s first-choice ‘keeper two years ago, claims not to have paid attention to his critics.
“Normally I never listen to the people who speak about me,” he said, ahead of United’s Champions League opener against Young Boys in Bern on Wednesday.
“I’m focused on my job and trying to help my team, trying to improve every session and trying to be as good as I can. I never listen to stupid things they say.”
Though he may have attracted criticism in his home country, De Gea could hardly receive more plaudits for his performances at club level with United.
De Gea’s representatives are currently in negotiations with the club over a new contract, with the 27-year-old’s present deal set to expire at the end of the season.
United retain an option to trigger a one-year extension of De Gea’s current terms, yet are still eager to tie down their player of the year in four of the last five seasons.
De Gea said he is happy at United on Tuesday, though stopped short of speaking directly about a new contract.
“I feel really loved in this club, the fans, all the people who work for this club, so I’m really happy to be at this club,” he said.
“It’s one of the best clubs in the world so for me, it’s really good to be part of this club.”
