Mats Hummels and Roman Weidenfeller jump into the crowd to apologise to angry Borussia Dortmund fans after loss to Augsburg

The loss by 10-man Augsburg keeps them at the bottom of the Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund players Mats Hummels and Roman Weidenfeller climbed a fence to speak with furious supporters last night after a 1-0 defeat by 10-man Augsburg kept them champions consigned to the bottom of the Bundesliga.

Dortmund won the title in 2011 and 2012, and finished runners-up last season, but have endured a woeful run of form this season. The loss by Augsburg in front of 80,000 supporters at the Westfalenstadion was their 11th in the league this season.

Raul Bobadilla scored the only goal of the game in the 50th minute for Augsburg, who lost Christoph Janker to a straight red card for a foul on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 14 minutes later.

After the loss, the club captain Hummels, a transfer target for Manchester United, and goalkeeper Weidenfeller were seen conversing directly with fans through the fence.

Dortmund's downbeat manager Jurgen Klopp said after the loss: "We can be accused of anything tonight and it is all justified. Battling also means having the courage to take the right decision. We were missing that tonight."
