The bus carrying the FC Twente team was pelted with stones while travelling to their Eredivisie game at AZ Alkmaar yesterday.

The vehicle was bombarded from a viaduct and sustained damage to the side and the rear, although no one was hurt.

Steve McLaren's side still played the match, which they lost 1-0 to remain four points ahead of Ajax at the top of the table.

The matter is being investigated by police.

"If the stone comes through the windscreen and hits you while travelling, what then?" Twente chairman Jupp Munsterman said on www.fctwente.nl.

"I cannot believe this has happened. How low can you get?

"We will certainly make a statement to police."

McLaren claimed the incident did not have an effect on the result of the match.

"That had no impact on our game," the former England boss said.

McLaren admitted his side need to bounce back from the defeat when they take on Feyenoord on Sunday if they are to remain on course for the title.

"We missed an opportunity but we still have it in our own hands," he added.

"The reaction of the team is very important.

"We must now win the last two games and go for it."
