Lionel Messi saw a last-minute penalty saved in a chaotic finale to their 0-0 draw at home to nine-man Sevilla that cost them the lead in La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his third hat-trick of the season in a 15-minute spell as Real Madrid won 4-0 at Malaga to go a point clear at the top.

Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas pulled off a string of impressive saves, including Messi's spot kick, as Barca were shut out for the first time at home this season. Iniesta was brought down for the penalty and Sevilla had striker Frederic Kanouté sent off after he tussled with Cesc Fabregas as the visitors disputed the decision. After the penalty save, Sevilla defender Fernando Navarro was also sent off for fouling Pedro.

Juventus missed the chance to go three points clear in Serie A as they drew 2-2 at home to Genoa. Alessandro Matri twice put Juve ahead but first Marco Rossi and then Andrea Caracciolo equalised.

Olympique Marseille, beaten 1-0 by Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, found some form in a 2-0 victory over Ajaccio at Stade Velodrome as protesting home fans stayed silent. Andre Ayew's double gave coach Didier Deschamps some breathing space.
