Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United tenure hit yet another low in defeat at FC Midtjylland.

Paul Onuachu’s goal thirteen minutes from time shocked the away side but, in truth, it could have been a lot worse.

Sergio Romero, who started the game after first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea picked up an injury in the warm-up, made several crucial stops to prevent further embarrassment.

The evening had started promisingly for United and particularly Memphis Depay, who recovered from slipping over in the box to trap the ball, turn and score.

His opener was cancelled out on the stroke of half-time, however, when the impressive Pione Sisto found Romero’s bottom-left hand corner from the edge of the box.

United, competing in the Europa League having been knocked out of the Champions League group stage in December, may now have to curb their ambitions of winning the competition.
