Arsenal have now failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the fifth season. On the night Arsenal won the game 2-0 but lost the tie overall 3-3 on aggregate on away goals.

The Gunners started the game with intensity and nous but couldn’t do enough to overturn the 3-1 defeat that they suffered in the first leg at the Emirates.

Olivier Giroud gave the Gunners hope ten minutes before half-time when his tenacity paid off and after Danijel Subasic had saved his initial shot, the Frenchman fired the rebound into the roof of the net.

Arsenal topped the possession charts throughout the match and their attacking work rate was again rewarded on 78 minutes. Theo Walcott hit the post but on the right side of the Monaco penalty area was Aaron Ramsey who took a touch before rifling his shot into the bottom right corner of Subasic’s goal.

The Gunners kept pressing and had chance after chance after chance to score the goal they needed to progress but it never came. Subasic and his defence held on.
